John Mayer, Shawn Mendes Share Stories About Their Famous Ex-Girlfriends Writing Songs About Them

During the latest episode of the How’s Life With John Mayer radio program, Shawn Mendes and host John Mayer bonded over their shared experience of having high-profile ex-girlfriends write hit songs about them. The two musicians are believed to have inspired songs of heartbreak and retribution from a who’s-who of pop superstars including Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Camila Cabello, and Sabrina Carpenter. “No one’s gonna understand,” Mayer said. “You and I are both talking as people who’ve heard songs that — at least other people are saying — are references to us.” Mendes agreed, and added, “It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed.” Mendes admitted that the short term pain is ultimately worth it in the end. “The suffering that is from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time,” Mendes shared.
